What is CSA?

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture.  The concept started 30 years ago in Japan and was introduced to the U.S. in 1985.  Today there are about 1,000 CSA groups in North America, revitalizing small farms and providing quality produce to 150,000 families.

Members support a farmer by purchasing “shares” of the harvest, and pay the farmer before the growing season begins so that he or she has money to farm the land.

Members receive whatever the farmer harvests weekly, and share the risk of thinks like bad weather and crop damage; they also share the rewards of the bounty from a good season. Farmers grow a wide variety of crops that thrive in different conditions, and the CSA harvest is partly insulated by sustainable practices.  On the whole, members receive a wide variety of vegetables in plentiful amounts.

By participating in the CSA, members support the farmer as well as a more equitable food distribution and help to create a more environmentally just, economically fair and healthy society.

What products are available at the CSA?

Vegetables, fruit, coffee, and honey and maple syrup.

Usually, each week’s vegetable share will consist of 7 –10 types of vegetables in season, weighing about10 –18 pounds (lighter in the spring, heavier in the winter). This is enough to feed a family of 2 to 4, depending on how much of your diet consists of produce.

How does the West Village CSA Work?

Members pay to recieve weekly deliveries of fresh produce for the whole season.  In addition to the fee, members are required to volunteer for several hours (number to be announced) to either handle distribution, coordinate volunteers and accept deliveries.  There is a core group of volunteers who stay involved all year and meet about once a month.

The pick-up location for this season will be at the Church of the Village on the  corner of 13th Street and Seventh Ave,

We encourage all members to be diligent about picking up their weekly share. If you cannot make the pick up one day, you should ask someone else to pick up your share (please give them a note or notify us as to who will be picking up for you).If no one is able to get your share, we will donate it to a non-profit food recipient.  Shares can not be held past 7pm on Tuesdays.

You may split a Vegetable Share with someone; however, you will need to make all your own arrangements, and you cannot increase the amount you take to even up the split.

Fruit Shares are not easily divisible as the shares come pre-packaged every week.

What are my responsibilities when I volunteer?

Thanks for taking a shift at the weekly distribution! This is the most important job in the CSA: please read the following instructions closely.
